Thank you for publishing this historical narrative. I usually kayak the famous Chili Bar whitewater run. But I’ve hiked the trail on the river right below Chili Bar a couple of times and the short South Fork Ditch on river left. These are not easy places to access. You can “sense” the history of the place, from the legacy of the Chilean miners to the Indigenous grinding holes dotting “Meatgrinder” rapid. The trail on river right gives a false impression of convenience from the river. Once upon it it shows its gnarly, overgrown, and hilly character. I’ve been seduced and deluded by its sight from afar. Once upon it one must experiment and decide the proper course in four or five places moving upstream, the true route not obvious until hindsight. An intrepid explorer will find a challenge thereon. I was a boy about 10 years old. I remember much about the camp ground and there were a few cabins for rent. The two families who owned the campground were Bob and ? Gilmore. They were brothers with families. After I was married I ran into one of the brothers managing a state campground near old Chili Bar. This was after the river was dammed above the campground. One or both brothers would swim up and down the river daily with swim fins. We also visited the inside of the slate mine across the river. There was also a dancing area with lights on the property which i imagine would be busy on the weekends. I think it was square dancing. My best parts of the vacations were panning for gold and tubing down the river. I would walk up the river about a 1/4 mile or so and tube down. Many good memories!Richardnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1172620894432077557.post-44985571382424123932022-04-21T18:27:10.912-07:002022-04-21T18:27:10.912-07:00Thank you, Tina, for posting this! I was thrilled that you mentioned my mother and shared the painting of the bridge that was done by my grandmother, Reba Sinclair, in 1941!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08737895993123833124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1172620894432077557.post-77831873948473190472021-10-16T22:32:36.179-07:002021-10-16T22:32:36.179-07:00Thanks for this, I recently moved about 1/4 mile u...Thanks for this, I recently moved about 1/4 mile up the hill from chilli bar and enjoy all the old history, you can actually see my property in that 1955 post card house was 1 year old at the time.
