After I did my post on platters awhile back, I found another one at a thrift shop that I couldn't resist. I felt that is was worthy of it's own post. I call it a platter, since it is 12 inches in diameter and large enough to be used as a serving piece. The dinner plates we use most often are only 9 inches - works better for my diet!
I just love the green and blue color combination! When I took this photo, I paired my pretty new platter with My Candlestick. My Candlestick is very special to me. I'm not sure I can adequately explain why. When I was growing up, we didn't have a lot, and not much money to spend, either. (Let me also say that we did not feel particularly deprived, and we had a wonderful childhood! We just didn't have a lot of new or nice stuff.) I bought this candle holder at Barker Brothers Furniture store in downtown Los Angeles with my own (saved) money when I was about 12 or 13, and I have never tired of looking at it since. The green paint on the wood has faded somewhat over time, but the blue ceramic still looks fabulous. I believe I paid $5 for it, and the price tag was still affixed to the bottom for a very long time, but it's gone now. I'm such a freak, I wouldn't be surprised if I kept it, and maybe I will find it some day.
The two look awfully nice together, don't they?
what great taste you had at such an early age. love that candlestick!
ReplyDeleteYes, our childhood has excellent memories and we did not feel deprived of things. Just learned the value at an early age. I learned to sew in 4-H and made a lot of my clothes from age 10-18. I enjoyed searching Montgomery Wards catalog and our local fabric shop for fabric and patterns. We made extra money by Babysitting neighbor kids. Always ate well, thanks to 2 great cooks, Mom and Dad. And of course learned to cook ourselves from them and 4-H cooking classes. Love my life!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove your platter! About growing up: As long as I got my tacos on Thursday night and Daddy's stew, soup or chuck steak on Friday nights, and we had my favorite ice cream in the fridge, I was happy. And Mother made sure we learned thrift shop shopping at an early age. Hand-me-downs from other families could be really cute stuff too. I agree we had a great childhood. Also, remember Grandpa Pop's used books and games from the Goodwill. Some of those are collector's items now. He was good thrift store training too! Love T
ReplyDeleteI agree they look perfect together. So neat that you still have that candlestick! Twyla
ReplyDeleteThey do look great. It's so fun to think about the things we saved up allowance for. I bought a Hallmark gift wrapping guide once and was in heaven.
