Lori had "Gus Was A Friendly Ghost" when we were kids, and I always loved it. I was so happy when I found a copy for myself! (She still has hers.)
I like to collect these old Scholastic books whenever I find them, and I put some of them out with my Halloween decorations:
"Mystery At Shadow Pond" looked especially familiar - so we either had it, or I knew someone who did:
Mysteries and ghost towns and frightening masks for secret hide-outs!
Oooohhh....very scary!
Not.
Scholastic books! Remember the book clubs they had through school?
ReplyDeleteOne of my favs was the "Wednesday Witch", and a ghost story about a girl who finds this cement owl in a tree, with glass eyes... And I wish I could remember the name of that book!
Great memories. =)
I just saw another copy recently at a Thrift store. I must have only rec'd them for one year, I only had a few. When my Daughter was young, in late 80's, we always ordered from the Scholastic Club, she loved to read as I do!!!!
ReplyDeleteI still have my copy of Gus too. I love(d) that book!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Scholastic Book was "The Secret Language". My friend Lynn and I tried to make up words all the time and used the words from the book. I think we were about 10 or 11. I used to buy tons of them. I would like to read all of your books, they look just the right amount of almost scary. Love T
ReplyDeletememories of all those books and discovering the joy of reading way back then. hey heidi - talked to patty last night.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful! Isn't it interesting how childrens books take us right back to a time and place in our memory?
ReplyDeleteI remember the Scholastic book faire at the schools I worked at. Kids love buying books.
The tradition carries on....
I adored Scholastic books, and The Secret Hide Out was one of my favorites - just seeing it brings back the memories of those paper-bag masks! I do remember being sad, though, that it felt very much like a boy book, and I wished there were some girl characters who could have that much fun!
ReplyDeleteThere was a sequel to "Secret Hide Out". It was called "Enemies of the Secret Hide Out." I think the cover was dark blue, like it took place at night. I hope you are able to find that one someday too!
