Lori's post about Ingeborg Hanson's note cards made me think of Peter Hunt. Mother had this book of his:
He was a wonderful artist who was very well known, especially for what he called his "peasant style" of decorative painting. His original decorated furniture and paintings can fetch a pretty penny today.
I remember Mother did some painting on wood with these peasant or Pennsylvania Dutch style motifs. They're so bright and beautiful!
Just LOOK at these gorgeous painted kitchen cupboards!
I found this advertisement featuring the Peter Hunt Peasant Cupboard Display for Universal brand appliances in a magazine from 1950:
I had seen that advertisement quite a while back, and when Elizabeth (Creative Breathing) and then Twyla (Two Crazy Crafters) found their fabulous cabinets, the ad above was the first thing that came to mind.
I believe his decals were quite popular back in the 1950's. I found this in Better Homes And Gardens magazine, 1952:
And just recently, I acquired a copy of Peter Hunt's Cape Cod Cookbook:
I'm definitely a fan!

ReplyDeleteLove your blog, I had art lessons when I lived in Ohio. My favorite part was painting Peter Hunt Style! Even got to visit his shop in Provincetown and Nancy Whorf's Gallery. My most memorable trip.
ReplyDeleteBack to Peter Hunt! My Father was a Sunday painter and he painted Peter Hunt designs all over my mother's relatives antiques. She had a fit. Even the crank phone on the wall. I'm going to do some for my Doodle Palooza group!!
