Rhapsody In Blue (Appliances)
With sincere apologies to the late, great George Gershwin, today we are here to enjoy appliances in blue.
Hotpoint, circa 1959:
See the lovely housewife rhapsodizing over her wonderful GE refrigerator/freezer on the wall:
And the GE "Book-shelf" Freezer, below - they really knew how to pack it in there, didn't they? (Gee, I think WE have some "bookshelves" like that.)
How about a lovely all-blue kitchen, courtesy of Frigidaire? From 1958:
Or, perhaps all you need is a nice, mobile blue Frigidaire dishwasher? Yes, we can do that, too. (From 1960)
GE ranges were used at the Pillsbury Bake-Off, 1959:
And finally, a hard-working pair in blue is relegated to garage status. Oh, well- at least they are still attractive with their blue hue. Kelvinator, circa 1959, as well:
I believe I now feel the need to do a follow-up to this post featuring appliances in other colors.
I'll see what I can do.
Great post! I've never seen a GE wall fridge/freezer. I wonder if this was a concept, or did people actually buy them? I'd love to see it. Plz post more color appliances..maybe orange or peach?
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! What an incredibly gorgeous film clip! Especially for it's time - that's some pretty tricky filmography (not sure I'm diggin the mustache on the guy in the introduction tho! Haha!). Those 50's color appliances sure were beautiful (I think), and I wish they would bring them back, maybe in a limited capacity. I know there are many people who are loving that retro look & are re-doing their homes in that time period that would truly LOVE to get their mitts on them. I LOVED those colored appliances - the black, white & chrome of now gets tiresome. Well, I certainly enjoyed this - EXCELLENT job! Thanks for all your great work. BTW - I don't think that wall frige ever came to fruition - I sure never saw one.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the wall refrigerator! I want one of those. I can't believe I've never heard of one before. What a great idea for a lot of reasons. I had a portable dishwasher once, it was too much trouble. By the time it was hooked up you could have done all of our dishes three times. Love the blue, definitely would like to see other colors. I agree with Vickie that we are very boring in our appliance colors nowadays. Love T
ReplyDeleteOh, I Love the blue appliances! I have never seen any in person. I grew up with harvest gold and avocado. Twyla
ReplyDeleteGE really did make that Wall Refrigerator-Freezer. I had never seen one, either - but you could buy it back in 1956. Cool.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is so....BLUE! Pretty! I am told that you can take your modern appliances to a car body shop and have them sprayed any color you like -- blue or pink or whatever. Probably cost a lot, though.
ReplyDeleteI love harvest gold and especially avocado, too.
ReplyDeleteyou have to watch this amazing turquoise dream kitchen makeover (he has one of those wall fridges in it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=7eLcbr59I10
ReplyDeleteReally, I don't know why those wall fridges didn't catch on..no stooping, no bending, most everything at eye level.
