The Cookie Jar Of My Dreams

I love green depression glass. I don't have a lot of it, but I do have some pieces that belonged to our mother, and I treasure them. When I first started collecting - back when I was a teenager, one of my first purchases was a trio of Jeanette jadeite pieces, and I concentrated more on that over the years. It seemed the transparent green glassware like this cookie jar were always priced beyond my means. But I have been admiring, and desiring a cookie jar like this one for more than 35 years! I'd see them at antique shows, in antiques shops, on eBay, etc. - always priced too high, more than I wanted to - or could afford to - pay, or I simply didn't have the money right then - you get the picture.
So when I turned my head while shopping at one of my favorite thrift stores and saw this jar sitting on the shelf, it was as though a fanfare sounded inside of my head. I scooped it up and cradled it in my arms as I shopped around.
I have a collection of the white Vitrock kitchen ware Hocking made in this same style, with the ribbed sides and the silver deco-style labels. I even already have a replacement label that would fit on this. But the original "Cookies" label on this is still mostly intact, and looks better than MANY of them I've seen over the years, so I am not planning to replace it. The lowest priced one for sale on eBay right now would cost over three times what I paid, if you add on the shipping costs.
Finally, FINALLY, a beautiful green transparent cookie jar made by the Hocking Glass Company of my very own.
It's about time.

  2. Heidi, you lucky duck! I think I'd hyperventilate if I ever found one of those in my thrift store. :) I'm so glad you found something your heart has desired for so long--good things come to those who wait! :)

  5. I'm so sorry. I was born w/o an appreciation for the aesthetic. Or maybe I need Mick's glasses.

I'm joking. Reminds me of a green glass container I saw in an antique shop downtown P'ville. Gawd, was it expensive! But tourists were buying. Locals go to the thrift stores. Heidi's a local on sabbatical.

Hey, Tina, I bake a pretty good batch of cookies. I bet a few of us could fill that jar up. We could have a cookie-in. Yum! :0)
