This vintage Singer sewing machine was given to me in the late 1970's by a gentleman our mother was dating at the time. I think his name was Frank, and I'm sorry I don't know his last name.
He repaired and "retro-fitted" machines, and he fixed this one so that it operated with a foot pedal. He just gave it to me, I'm not sure why - just to be nice, I guess!
Nice wooden case, portable - but heavy!
And I used it, but then, after time, I no longer remembered how to thread it nor thread the bullet-shaped bobbin. I don't have any instruction book, so it has sat idle for MANY years.
But I like it - and it was the only machine I had.
In the photo below you see it sitting on the old "New Home" sewing machine table that Daddy put a new top on many years ago. He had taken out the non-operational machine inside and just added a top and made it into a desk.
I have taken it with me everywhere I've lived since I first moved away from home.
It has served me well as a desk or vanity table in every "New Home" it has moved in to all these years.
I have always used it, and I plan to continue to do so for the rest of my life.
And next up, it is destined to eventually be the table on top of which my new Singer will sit:
"Singer Tradition" - that seems a fitting name for my new machine. I ordered it from Joann's online, when it was on sale with free shipping.
Not quite as ornate as my old one, but much more portable!
Don't know that I'll be moving it around too much, though.
You may have already guessed that this is the machine I used to make Heidi's horse pillow, and it has most certainly found a "New Home" here with me.
Singers "Then" and "Now" - and "now" I just need to create some more pillows - and other stuff!
Yes, crank up that girl and make some more fabulous pillows!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to more of your creations. Loved reading the story. I guess I never met Frank, I remember a Chuck, but have no idea what he did for a living or a hobby. That old machine is like a piece of sculpture, and it sure did find a great home with you. Love T
ReplyDeleteLove your old machine! They are really a work of art. But the new one will be better for practical reasons...sew on.
ReplyDeleteThat old sewing machine is beautiful but the new one will serve you well for all your sewing needs.
ReplyDeleteThe really old ones are heavy and dangerous but they are lovely works of art. Keep it out somewhere and dust it once in a while... but enjoy the new one.
Great post.
That old machine is beautiful. My sister has two "footies" from my grandfather.. Love them
ReplyDeleteceodraiocht, my granny had a "footie" just as beautiful as Heidi's. My sis inherited it. She cherishes it. Hey, I like Frank. [I'm sorry. I don't remember his last name either.]
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more information? It is extremely helpful for me.

i have 2 or 3 singer pedal machines, my mom's and my grams. i have a singer my mom bought me when i was in jr high school - so that would be very early 60's. i would like a more up to date one but that will have to wait......
ReplyDeleteI have this exact same machine. I bought it from a friend and I’m curious why the box looks different than yours it’s not down, but the top is not wooden. It’s the exact same machine though and it’s a retrofit it as well with the foot pedal.
