My husband made that very same string art piece in his boyhood, and two more. Never saw them until after we'd been married 25 years. Needless to say, they are about to go up on his office walls.
I used to do some crewel stitchery and I still have a lot of the yarn I purchased in the 70's. I don't know if the yarn is any good now and I don't really have time but I would love to try it again. The sting art reminds me of Spirograph images. My sister gave me a new Spirograph for Christmas.
