Burl Ives

Burl Ives seemed like he must have been SUCH a nice old guy. I love his distinctive voice, and thank goodness I can still hear it any time I want. I was inspired to write about him because I found this album recently at a thrift shop:
I already had this piece of sheet music. How many of you out there remember this song?
I even remember watching his old TV show titled "O.K. Crackerby". He was such a marvelous actor who enjoyed a very long career playing many different kinds of characters. Who can forget him as the snowman in Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer? And some of my very favorites were his Disney roles. Like when he sang this song, below in "So Dear To My Heart".
But especially when he played Osh Popham in "Summer Magic":
I got this soundtrack LP on eBay, and the comic book, too.
I love "Ugly Bug Ball" - but I think my favorite has to be "On The Front Porch." It's such a sweet, old-fashioned romantic song.
I am delighted that my favorite entertainers will live on forever in their roles and their music!

  1. I of course remember Burl Ives as the voice of the snowman, but I'm afraid not much else. Although this Christmas I heard a song he recorded and it wasn't "Silver and Gold," or "Holly, Jolly, Christmas." I can't remember what the song was, but when they said it was Burl, I was quite surprised.

  4. Really did enjoy seeing the Burl Ives eye-candy! My favorite memory of him is when he loaned his amazing voice to the Snowman... He really brought that character to life for me...

  5. oh, Heidi! I LOVE Burl Ives!!! I watched Summer Magic not long ago cuz i love Haley Mills, too! Was it in So Dear to My Heart that Burl sings Can She Bake a Cherry Pie Billy Boy? I had thought it was Summer Magic and was so disapointed when it wasn't on there!

  8. That was Beulah Bondi - and that I don't know. I would have to get the movie out and watch it - and perhaps I should! If you remember it, it is probably so!
