Color Wheels

Just a spot of color for you today, in the form of various color wheels I have found in some of my vintage books.

And I know I should have written down where I got them, but I didn't, and I'm sorry.

I just enjoy looking at them:

The Peter Max Stamp

I have written before about how much I love these postage stamps designed by Peter Max:

"Preserve The Environment" for Expo '74, they are colorful and fabulous.

The first day of issue for these stamps was exactly forty-one years ago today, so I thought I would share a few fantastic first day covers I discovered on eBay.
Let's start with The Beatles and Abbey Road, because it's my favorite!

This one is pretty cool, too:

And I love the combination of pink and orange together, so I am rather fond of this one, as well:

I felt the need to throw in this first-day cover, which was actually for the Jimi Hendrix stamp - but they added my two faves to it, Peter Max AND the Robert Indiana Love stamp!

Give me some colorful Peter Max artwork any day of the week......

Birds Of A Feather

They say "Birds of a feather flock together", right?
Well these two fabulous vintage birds are at least sitting together on my shelf:

They make quite the pretty pair, these two recent acquisitions for my bank collection:

I do not know what type of birds they are meant to be (don't care, either, actually - they're fabulous so it matters not to me), but they look as proud as peacocks!
And I was as happy as a lark to find them!

Little Pooh Books

I just could not resist this little miniature library of Winnie The Pooh books when I saw it at a thrift store:

 "Pooh's Pot o' Honey", by A. A. Milne, a set of four little books in a slipcase, published by E. P. Dutton & Co., Inc. in 1974.

 WAY too cute to leave behind, especially since I already have my treasured little "Nutshell Library" of Maurice Sendak books, which I have written about before.

 I love Pooh and his friends; they have the sweetest little stories!

 And, of course, they feature the wonderful artwork of Ernest H. Shepard:

Besides, little bitty books don't take up much room at all.
(I have one other little set of books I have owned since the 1970's that I don't believe I have written about yet - I promise to show you those one of these days, as well.)

Salamanders on the Georgetown Divide

A facebook friend shared some photos of salamanders found on the Georgetown Divide. These newts were seen on the middle fork of the American River and also at Knickerbocker Creek.

Apparently when they are all wadded up together it is called a mating ball.

I only see one or two around my house here in Kelsey, but I guess I might see more if I went down to the river.

And from the looks of these mating balls, there will be even more of them around next year.

I just love these little guys.

I hope they find nice moist places to hang out during the dry weather.

Patterns From The Past: Simplicity 5272 - A Mini-Dress Or Smock

Today's pattern is a "Super Simple" Simplicity pattern from 1972,
worn below by the lovely Sunny Redmond:

It would be a cute smock/cover-up to wear in place of an apron, if you were working on something, I suppose.

An Assortment Of Finds

Today I have a somewhat random selection of thrift store finds to share.
We'll start with this cute, kitschy "Kaffee Klatch" tray with it's Pennsylvania Dutch designs:

I really like this bird pin, marked "Made In Germany" on the back:

I think the binder pictured below is pretty cool.  I suppose they may  be common, but I have never seen one like it - it has handles to carry it with:

Carry it, and then flip it and open it up. Convenient, and quite attractive, as well:

I also picked up this little "watering can" in ceramic, by Counterpoint. You can water plants with it if you like, or even use it as a cream pitcher.

I found some more pretty poppy placemats:

And a tablecloth and brightly colored plastic hooks. I like these hooks; I had one just like them when I was a teenager, only it was ceramic:

And I'm pretty sure the tablecloth is vintage, because who puts these kinds of sweet graphics on packaging nowadays?

I already had the Mary Engelbreit clock seen in the next photo, and I found the little teapot lamp that matches it at a thrift store. There is no marking on it, and at this particular thrift, I'm pretty sure they'd have priced it higher if they had known it was a Mary Engelbreit item:

When I was digging around in some boxes about a month ago that have been in storage for years, I rediscovered my can opener with the aqua painted wooden handle, and at a thrift store I found this cool chopper to go with it. I've tried out the chopper - easy to use, and I like it!

And I also found one of these shakers buried in a box that was packed away years ago. Now that I have paired it with my other one, I have an useful pair. 

(I had to snag the lid off of another shaker, in order to have a true vintage aluminum one that matched!)
Salt and pepper, anyone?

What's Penny Wearing? #114 A Pairing With Pure Old Fashioned Charm

The blouse that Penny has on today is from the 1970's.
I used to wear it with a couple of my old-fashioned Gunne Sax skirts.
The skirt seen with it here was made for me to wear on a special occasion in the fall of 1980.
 (More about that in a later post.)

They look pretty good when paired together:

I added this lovely brooch which was a gift from my friend Heidi:

I have always loved the old-fashioned look.

Simple and lovely, and they certainly look nice on Penny.
(Wish they still fit me!)
