Hey There, Little Red Riding Hood

"Who's that I see walking in these woods? Why, it's Little Red Riding Hood!"

Hey there, Little Red Riding Hood....
...you sure are lookin' good:

You're everything that a big, bad wolf could want.
Now, who do you suppose would be crazy enough to purchase a red wool hooded jacket in the middle of summer?
Keep guessing.
Nope, not her:
Come on - don't you think she already had one?
Or two?

All right, already - yes, 'twas I.

I couldn't help myself. It's from Coldwater Creek, and the price was right. And it goes so well with the scarf my friend Marcia gave me a couple of years ago for my birthday.
I am so totally calling it my "Little Red Riding Hood Jacket", and I can hardly wait until the weather is cold enough to wear it!

The Past is Present in Camino, California

Good morning. Tina here. I am not feeling exactly like a font of information this morning, nor am I in a musing or poetry spouting mode. But I do have some great photos of Camino, California that I got at the County Museum last Sunday when I was there for my volunteering stint. So I will share those with you without much comment, if you don't mind.
Highway 50 once went right through the middle of Camino. It was a slower world then, thank goodness!

Camino still looks very much the same as you drive through on what is now Carson Road.

Yes, they still get a nice heaping of snow. This is the old Camino Hotel.

The hotel again. Load up that wagon, tote that bale!

I went to high school with a member of the Barrett family. They have been a fixture in Camino for a long time.

Camino is an old lumber town, and many of the little homes along the side of the road were built for the employees.

Bring your car in and they will tune up your motor and pump you some gas. Don't ask them to check your onboard computer though.

The road through town curves a bit as it heads past the store.

Tall pines still mark the sides of the road.

My son lived in a little wooden house in Camino for a year, he got very tired of the snow. Luckily he had moved by this past winter, it was really a bear!

Wide roads mean more work for the snowplow!

The snow looks rather refreshing now, looking back on it from July.

Old homes tucked into the fields, apple trees growing everywhere now, I wonder what they grew here back then?

Nice big porch to watch the snowfall from, or listen to the frogs in the spring.

Good, the plow made its way through and we can get there from here.

There must have been a real sense of community in Camino, people living and working together.

Railroad crossing ahead, a train full of lumber coming through.

The Antler's Club was a fixture into the 1980s. We once were members of a food co-op and we used their room to split up our bags of grain and large chunks of cheese. It was a lot of fun!

I believe this old place is still visible from Snow's Road. It needs a facelift.

I went to school with Rotiers and Davenports also.

Sargents too. I guess if a place is a good place to live, the families stay around for a while.

These places across from the store and post office are a little changed, but still exist.

This is a Bosquit house, there is also a larger Bosquit home in Placerville on Bedford Avenue.

We are going to leave Camino now, the snow is getting a bit too high. We will come back again someday with some history when I am feeling more chatty.

Busy Doing Nothing

I got a kick out of Tina's recent post with a similar title, because I had been planning to write this one. Ah, well - great minds think alike, right?
When I went to stay with Tina for a few days a short time ago, we did just kind of "kick back", and we managed to watch two great movies in one day. We don't get the Turner Classic Movies channel here, and I often see that they have GREAT old films I would love to watch. So I jumped at the chance (well, I probably didn't actually jump - we were taking it easy, after all), to watch "A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court"! I LOVE Bing Crosby, and as ridiculous as it seems, I do not think I have ever seen this film. Or possibly, it was simply so long ago that I've forgotten. Well, of course I loved it. I purchased the vintage magazine ad you see in this post many years ago:

While we were watching it, I was waiting and waiting for a certain part. Somewhere, some time over the years, I had seen clips or something, because I DID remember this one particular little song, and I was eager to see that portion of the film more than any other.

Wouldn't you know it? RIGHT when they started singing my song, my husband called! Aaackk!

Oh, well - I have the sheet music (thanks to eBay).
"We're busy doing nothing,
working the whole day through.
Trying to find lots of things not to do.
We're busy going nowhere, isn't it just a crime?
We'd like to be unhappy, but..
we never do have the time!"
And that's pretty much how we were that weekend: "busy doing nothing".
And we liked it.
(We also got to watch "Bell, Book and Candle" - another one I am not sure I have ever seen! What in the heck is the matter with me??)

What's Penny Wearing? #50 Thrifted And Gifted - Again

Penny is at it again, modeling a few more of my thrift store finds. Another combo for the "thrifted and gifted" line is this lovely shirt with little pink roses on pale mint-green background and a great pair of espadrilles. I couldn't believe my luck finding these shoes - I've been wanting a pair forever! The pink necklace was from the jewelry lot my friend JoAnn gave to me.
And I also found a very pretty and bright orange apron:

Thanks, Penny, for the little modeling show. You do a great job.

Summer Wine

"Strawberries, cherries, and an angel's kiss in spring....."

"My summer wine is really made from all these things...."

I LOVE this Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood song - I always have.
I don't actually make my own summer wine, but if I did, those would surely be lovely ingredients to add, don't you think?

Try to enjoy a glass of summer wine this evening, won't you?

My Latest Thrift Finds

Blue and green florals (one of my favorite combinations!) on a lovely tray and a small rectangular cloth. I guess it's a place mat:

A vintage dish towel made in France (exclusively for The Broadway) with artwork from a Toulouse-Lautrec work printed on it, a nice little vintage cup, an handmade pottery bowl, turquoise saucer to put under a small planter, and a Harker China "Mallow" serving spoon:
I found another of these vintage pillow cases, the mate for one I already had. I love the large, graphic flowers on them:
Two lovely ladies found the same week in different towns; one is a pillow case and the other a dresser scarf:
A very cool mid-century wooden fish tray - for serving crackers or nuts, I suppose:
A set of four HEAVY restaurant china divided plates. They are a bit too heavy for me to use on any kind of regular basis, so I took them up to the shop. Also, a cute rooster trivet, a little dish that matches another restaurant china plate I have, and a little USA covered casserole:
This fabulous vintage hamper has already been purchased up at the shop. I realized after I took the photo that it was actually a pretty good match for the bedspread we have on our bed!

I really liked it, but we have quite a few vintage hampers already - and no room for another one!
