The Wedding

The wedding I mentioned on May 1st was that of my youngest stepson.
The happy couple...
...were wed in a wonderful garden setting in full bloom:
Wendy in her glorious gown was such a lovely sight to behold...
...even the back of her dress was fabulous!
The dinner was delicious:
And every detail - including this delectable cake - was elegant, simple, and beautiful.

Absolutely gorgeous.
It was a perfect day.

Charlotte Steiner's ABC (From 1946)

Sis Lori here - I wanted to share with you all some pages from this neat vintage book.
Here is the cover - it's a little the worse for wear, but great all the same:

"H for the horse that Henry is racing":

"M for the mail that Mark is posting":

"O for the orange juice Olive is drinking":

"Q for the quilt that Queenie is making":

"T for the trash that Tessie is burning":

"U for the umbrella Ursula's holding":

"Y for the young ones - and that means you!"

It's such a sweet book and I am happy to own it!!

What's Penny Wearing? #28 Faded Floral

Today Penny Lane is presenting a lovely dress I found at a thrift store. It's a lovely sort of faded vintage-look floral, with mother-of-pearl buttons down the entire length of the front.

I paid $1.75.
Now, that's what I call a bargain!

Favorite Products From My Past

Today's post is about is products from my past. In some cases, it may be something that I really used to like a LOT that I haven't used for a very long time. Jean Nate is one of those. I loved the scent years ago. For quite awhile, actually. I guess I outgrew it or something? Or moved on, I'm not sure which:

Next up: Yardley's English Lavender - I have loved this scent for years! I never did get tired of IT, though - I would happily use it again if I could just find it. (I don't want to pay extra for shipping - I know I could order it online.)
I did pick up one of the vintage bottles in an antiques shop (on the right, below). And there is a teeny bit left in my spray bottle. I guess I just can't bear to use the last of it - I may not find any more:
I like the cologne spray, the soap and the talcum powder. It's all good.

Noxzema Skin Cream. I washed my face with this stuff every day for at least thirty years! I finally switched to something else.
The look of the label has changed over the years:

I didn't like it when they started packaging it in plastic containers, so I found myself a vintage glass Noxzema jar and transferred mine into it for daily use. I even used a small vintage jar to carry some in my travel bag. Now they look pretty with my other little blue glass bottles in the bathroom window.

Do you remember the original Clairol Herbal Essence Shampoo? I used it in high school, and beyond. LOVED it. Honestly, I think I may have only quit using it when it no longer existed in it's original form. I was in love with the scent of it. I just recently discovered that they offer a similar formula here. I'm not interested in paying 14.95 plus shipping for a bottle of shampoo, even though I'd secretly love to try it again.
Yes, I used the creme rinse, too:

I suppose I didn't stray too far- now I use these:

I go through the conditioner pretty fast- WAY faster than the shampoo! My hair was long back in high school, but not nearly as long as it was in this picture:

Since that photo was taken, I have had about 8 inches cut off the length. It had been four years since I had a professional haircut!
(I'm pretty low maintenance.)
It looks MUCH better now.
Next up are three products I started using MANY years ago that I actually still use to this day....
Cover Girl Clean Make-up and Powder:

And Maybelline Great Lash Mascara:

They look a little different now:
I like to say, "When you find a good product, stick with it!"
Works for me.

Vintage Sparkle-Ware Plastic Tulip Napkin Holders

Good morning. Gold Country Girl Big Sis Tina Dawn here. When Heidi did her blog on her Teapot Napkin Holders on March 12th, I thought - I want to do that with my Tulip Napkin Holders! I had a slight hold-up though, which I will tell you about later in this blog.
Here is a lovely light pink napkin holder. I am showing some of my vintage "Dutch" linens in the background of my photos. I am again borrowing the idea from Heidi, her shots of her Teapot Napkin Holders were so well done.
This is the most beautiful shade of blue. The hard vintage plastic items are the just the most loveliest, clearest, brightest colors. I have been collecting vintage hard plastic items for many years, and I know it was the bright colors that first caught my eye. That, and the low prices. The plastic pieces are finally becoming popular now, so the prices have gone up, but they are still affordable, usually.
Bright sunny yellow. These napkin holders were made by Sparkle-Ware in the good ol' U.S.A.
Pretty emerald green. Very spring-like. I found all these napkin holders on ebay, except for the first one I ever bought, which was red. Unfortunately, not long ago, I was attempting to get the red one down from atop a cabinet in my laundry room and I dropped it onto the washing machine, and it broke. Hard vintage plastic is VERY fragile! I still kept it for several months, even though it was broken, because I was heart broken over breaking it. Then came Heidi's blog about her Teapot Napkin Holders, and it made me go searching for another red one on ebay. I found one that was with a large amount of other items, buy it now, and they wanted way to much money. I found another buy it now red one that is in terrible condition, broken and scratched, and they still wanted a lot for it. Then finally along came a dealer in Florida who had a nice red one for sale at a good price. So I bought it and replaced my broken one. I finally threw the broken one away, but it was hard to do that... I am still so sad about breaking it.
Here is my "new" red one, none the worse for wear after it's long trip from Florida.
That is all I have for now, but like Heidi, I want some other colors. I hear tell there is a white one out there, and perhaps some other colors. So I will keep searching.
Now, don't tell Heidi, it's a secret, but when she did her post on the Teapot Napkin Holders I already had a color she didn't have, and didn't mention. Then when I went on my search for a red tulip, I found two more colors she didn't have in the teapots. So I have three new colors for her that I am trying to keep for her birthday... but since that is so far off I am probably going to give in and give them to her now. They want to be with her collection. But until then, mum's the word, okay?

Then And Now #65 Waxtex

Waxtex waxed paper products - seen here in an advertisement from 1942:

And here, in another advertisement from 1954:

This cute little girl looks like she enjoys using the bags! (1961)
I can't find these any longer at any of the grocery stores we frequent:
I guess that's all right, this box I have had for a while seems to be lasting me a long time:
But, for some reason, it just makes me kind of sad when I go looking for something that has always been around, and it's gone. They probably still make them, they simply aren't available where I shop.
That has been happening to me a LOT lately.
And I don't like it.

More Cookbooks For My Collection

Um, remember when I showed you my 1967 Hors D'oeuvre book awhile back? Well, after I found that one, I got to thinking maybe there were others out there like it. Well, guess what? There were:
And I had to make them mine. I just think they are really cool little vintage cookbooks. They are all from the same publisher: Determined Productions, San Francisco.
You may not remember my Zodiac Calendar was from the same company. Cocina Mexicana was written by June Dutton and illustrated by Ann and Bruce Butte (who also did the calendar!):
An illustration from inside:
British Grub was written by Brian Murphy and illustrated by John Astrop and Eric Hill, also published in 1969:
And here is an illustration from inside that one:
Mangiare Italiana is by June Dutton again, and illustrated by Alain Le Foll, published in 1971:
And an illustration:

And French Favourites has recipes by Nathalie Le Foll and illustrations by Alain Le Foll (1969 again):
And here is an illustration from that one, as well:

Colorful and quirky little cookbooks.
I think there are more, but, you know me, right?
I wouldn't want to get too carried away....

April Showers And May Flowers

We DID have quite a few April showers. These three little girls (Sisters? I like to think so.) "With their baskets filled with flowers that sprang from the April showers" look to be all set to ring your doorbell and run away, leaving their baskets behind on this first day of May:
"May Flowers on your pathway this pretty news repeat. There's naught as good as friendship to make a joy complete."
We are off to a wedding today - and I just wanted to wish all of our faithful readers and blog friends a happy May day!
