Then And Now #7 - Uncle Ben's Rice

Uncle Ben's Rice mix, as seen here in the ad below from 1969. Their recipe in the advertisement sounds yummy (click on it to make it larger), except I would leave out the turkey liver, and I'd rather use fresh mushrooms:
And as found today in my cupboard:
I also have a recipe somewhere for using this mix for stuffing Cornish game hens. You add dried cranberries, and I think you pour orange juice over the hens before roasting. I've used it twice, and of course I guess it's more of a fall or winter dish - but they were really good!

Birthday Folks

I didn't read the paper until this evening. I had no idea so many celebrities were celebrating their birthdays today! Fess Parker is 84.
The fabulous Eydie Gorme is 77.
Sharing their birthdays are Robert Culp, Julie Newmar, Lesley Ann Warren, Madonna, Steve Carell, Frank and Kathie Lee Gifford ; lots of people I like! So, I'm not too late - it's still their day - Happy Birthday, everybody, and thank you for many years of great entertainment!

More Finds - Just A Couple

One of the other things I found last weekend at a thrift shop - a PINK vintage Rubbermaid dinnerware rack! (No, the dishes didn't come with it. I added some of my restaurant china, just for show. I also found the little sprinkles shaker, complete with old contents - icky. I brought it home and washed it and put in new fresh sprinkles, so it's ready for use!)
Here is the rack in a magazine advertisement from the 1950's:

I've written about my love for Ransburg a few times before. Here is one more photo of some of my pieces:
And now, for the "piece de resistance" :
A yellow Ransburg towel rack!! And it is "Practically Perfect In Every Way"! I have seen these come and go on eBay out of my price range, so I could not believe my luck when I found this at a yard sale for $4. Then again - luck? Phooey! It was meant to be mine all the time!

Hope you have a wonderful day!! Love, Heidi

Finds From Last Weekend

My sister and I had a couple of days last weekend to go out to yard sales and thrift shops. Here are some of the things I found. A nice vintage bread box, an April Cornell enamel bowl that I'm using now to hold summer tomatoes, a cute little fruitcake tin, and I didn't have the small size milk glass vase, so I picked that up, too.
A Snow White book (I will always buy these if they are inexpensive, even if I already have it!), a cute little wicker "suitcase" - I HAD to get that because it is exactly like the one I've had for over 35 years - and who can't use something else to store stuff in? And the assortment of trims and rick rack were all bagged together at a different thrift store:

Couldn't pass up Betty Crocker's Dinner In A Dish - didn't have this one in my collection yet, and it cost me 45c less than it did new, according to the original price sticker. And the condition is nearly perfect. I have one of those copper chafing dishes that belonged to my mother-in-law. The pretty little rose-painted china lid was a quarter - I know I will find something it fits atop. The blue index file cards are perfect for a smaller box I am storing old photos in. And I am in love with the little bird. She was $1 and is a sweet little tweet.I liked the artwork on the cover of this old Hawaiian album:
And this lovely scarf is 21X74 inches. With it's velvet peacocks and sewn-on beads and tasseled and beaded fringe at each end, it was simply too pretty to pass up.
I'm saving a couple of other finds for another post.

Vintage Unmentionables

Oh, what the heck - let's mention them. Just because I think they are fun to see. From 1911:
And 47 years later - a new version of a corset, a Poirette "corselette":
And how about doing the same thing - but in two pieces this time, for better comfort? From Vassarette:
And a different version by Silf Skin:
And an original Silf Skin package with insert:
A cute ad for Cameo Shapemaker Stockings from 1959:
And a Belle-Sharmeer stocking box from the 1930's, just because it's silver and black and I like the look of it:
And a couple of cute little accessories that could come in handy!

Jane Austen On Screen

Where the heck have I been?? This is embarrassing to admit, (so, why do it on a blog? Dunno- just crazy, I guess!) but I have never read a single one of Jane Austen's novels. Nor had I ever seen any of the film adaptations until fairly recently. I know. I have no flimsy excuses, merely statements of fact. But - when PBS had the whole Jane Austen series on Masterpiece, I either watched and/or taped them all. And yes, I LOVED them! Especially this one:
I've had this little Bantam paperback for many years. Why didn't I read it?
I even bought this lovely hardbound copy from 1945 with it's beautiful color illustrations inside:
When my sister was visiting in June, we sat and watched both the PBS version of "Emma" and the Gwyneth Paltrow version in the same evening! And then, most recently, I watched the "Sense and Sensibility" from PBS Masterpiece that I had recorded. And I just got this one the other day:
I'll be watching it as soon as I can. And I want to see every other adaptation that I haven't yet seen. And I will be reading the books, too. I promise.
Please don't tell anyone. Like I said, I'm kind of embarrassed.

My Favorite Framed Prints #16

Just another pair of prints I put together for sale, combining thrift store frames with pretty coordinating botanical prints and mats. The Black-Eyed Susan:
And a single sunflower:
Simple, but I think they look nice.

Then And Now #6 - Baker's Chocolate

La Belle Chocolatiere - "this dainty lady is a guarantee of purity, quality, and goodness", from Baker's Chocolate and Cocoa products, made at the time by Walter Baker & Co, Ltd. in Dorchester, Mass.
The recipe booklet above has lots of great-looking recipes and even color pictures of some of the chocolate goodness found within.
I seem to always have some of this chocolate on hand.
Baker's is the brand I buy most often for baking. Not sure why, except perhaps that I think it's the kind Daddy usually bought. He did the grocery shopping after work on payday Friday. Back then, there weren't as many choices at the grocery store, you know. Nothing like now! Here is how an 1/2 lb. package looked in 1925: And here is a magazine advertisement from 1956:
And this is inside the front cover of a recipe book dated 1958:The front of the same recipe book:
And as it looks today -straight from my baking cupboard!
I probably use it most often for brownies or chocolate frosting. I'm making myself hungry.

My Miscellanea - Heidi With Dark Hair

I bought this sweet little piece of handiwork done in applique and embroidery many years ago. I was convinced she has to be Heidi -she has goats and everything!
And, after all, many of the vintage Heidi books in my collection do show Heidi with dark hair. Like this one:
But lots of others are blonde, just like me and my friend Other Heidi. When we worked together, we were Good Heidi and Bad Heidi. Guess which one I was?

Little Lambs Eat Ivy

I love this silly little song, so I thought I'd share it today with the cover of the sheet music - one in my huge collection of Bing Crosby pieces.
And the lyrics:
I know a ditty nutty as a fruitcake,
Goofy as a goon and silly as a loon.
Some call it pretty, others call it crazy
but they all sing this tune:
Mairzy Doats and Dozy Doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?
Yes! Mairzy Doats and Dozy Doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?
If the words sound queer, and funny to your ear,
a little bit jumbled and jivey,
Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy"
Oh! Mairzy Doats and Dozy Doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you -oo?
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?
Now, how cute is that music cover - with a mare, a doe, and a little lamb eating ivy, too? And Bing, of course!
And, just because I feel like it, here are a few more cute little lambs, from the adorable vintage cards I love so much.
I mean, come on - total cuteness!

White Stallions

Last night I watched the Walt Disney Production "The Legend of El Blanco". I had recorded it back when the Disney Channel used to have neat OLD stuff on. I wish they still did -but I'm sure glad I have some of the programs. I didn't remember ever having seen this film. It was first shown on the television show Sept. 25th 1966, so it is possible I saw it then. As was usual, the program was introduced by Walt Disney - this one was telecast less than 3 months before he died. The film itself was, well - let's just say... unusual, as it was "narrated" largely in song, performed by Los Tres Con Ella and Pepe Callahan. I enjoyed it, the horses were gorgeous ( with Assam as El Blanco), and I will take any excuse to see Walt.
I also remember seeing "The Miracle of the White Stallions" years ago. I'm not sure that I saw it during it's theatrical release - perhaps it was later shown on The Wonderful World of Color or elsewhere on TV. I do remember feeling that it was a very good movie (not to mention the fact that it has Robert Taylor in it!), and I'd like to watch it again sometime. At a church sale recently, I purchased this 50 year old National Geographic Magazine specifically because it has a 20 page article about the Lippizaner stallions.
The article is accompanied by some great photographs, such as the one below.
The World Famous Lippizaner Stallions are currently on tour in California, headed to Oregon, and onward from there. They were actually in our area last week, but I'm sorry to say we didn't go. I imagine that would be a great show to see!

Happy Anniversary To Us

It's our anniversary today, so I thought I'd post the front of this cute little card given by my husband's dad to his mom in the 1940's.
It has a sweet little sentiment:
A happy anniversary to that certain one who rates...
as the very nicest partner in the whole United States!
We may not have a million...
but we're happy as can be,
for we have each other, sweetheart, and that's good enough for me!
I get to pick a restaurant for dinner. Mexican food is nearly always my first choice, so that's what it will be tonight. I especially love bringing home leftovers, which makes it seem like an extra dinner for free!

A Handsome Young Man

How many of you recognize the face of this handsome young man?? Don't look below the picture yet - take a guess.
This is a 1959 magazine advertisement for the new "Eldorado Sportable" portable TV from RCA Victor. If you guessed John Davidson, you're right! This must have been one of his very first jobs. I have always really liked him. I remember him from the Kraft Summer Music Hall. For some reason, the song I most associate with him from that time is "More". Love it. I don't have the sheet music, so here's a different one:
"I'll Try Lovin' You Less":
And here with Lesley Ann Warren in Disney's The Happiest Millionaire. I absolutely LOVE this scene in which they dance and sing "Are We Dancing", written by the fabulous Sherman Brothers! He has done many things over the years - remember "The Girl With Something Extra" with Sally Field? And I really enjoyed him as the host on Hollywood Squares, too. Best of all, we actually got to see him perform in person at the Music Circus in Sacramento as Professor Harold Hill in The Music Man! He was GREAT!

My Favorite Framed Prints #15

I found this great set of bird prints at a thrift shop in Laytonville, California in May of last year. A pretty bluebird:
A lovely little goldfinch:
A bold and bright red cardinal:
And I'm actually not sure about this last one. Some kind of a thrush or a flicker? Anybody?
I love birds, and I was happy to find this quartet of winged beauties at a great price.
(Note: I found a color plate in an antique book, and the picture of a Fieldfare looks very similar to this. I had never heard of them before! I'm still not completely sure that's what it is, though. 8-23-08)
