Got Carnation?

Sorry, but I have never thought instant dry nonfat milk was delicious for drinking. Cute ad, though - from Life Magazine 1959. I always have nonfat milk in my refrigerator, but no nonfat dry milk in my cupboard. I do have the two products below, however. I still use these!
This paper doll is cute. I'm not sure how old she is. Maybe a giveaway you could send for in the mail? I love those, don't you?
Here is a picture of the great old Carnation Ice Cream Parlor at Disneyland sometime in the 60's. This photo is from a book we purchased at Disneyland titled "Disneyland, Then, Now & Forever: Remember The Moments".
And here's a picture of a vintage menu from the restaurant. I loved to eat there, and I remember what it was like inside years ago. They used to serve Fantasia ice cream there. It was specially made just for Disneyland. I did finally try it once in 1996, and I'm glad I did because it was discontinued in 2004.
I'm really happy that I have this picture I took of the gorgeous, ornate back bar in the summer of 1974.
And here is a picture of Walt himself at the counter. (No I didn't take this one!)
It's all different now, of course. You can only sit and eat outside. Now called the Carnation Cafe; it's still nice, and we eat there every time we go. Here is a picture we snapped two months ago of Oscar, who has worked there since 1956. He keeps "threatening " to retire - but I don't think he would know what to do with himself! We love to see him when we visit, and try to get a picture. We will miss him when/if he does retire.
We will still enjoy a meal there, though- last time we ate breakfast there two days in a row!

My Favorite Framed Prints #9

This pair is different from most of my others. But I like them. The Anthurium:
and the Bird of Paradise:
More modern in design, and pretty in pastel tinted frames.

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Daddy's Day. This is a cute little card that my husband and his brother gave to their dad years ago. And with it, a little photo of our Daddy with all of his girls! Wish we could still celebrate this day with him.
And this vintage card, below, was given from hubby's mom to his dad way back when. This is so cute, it's like a little booklet with six pages inside and the little poem I've included at the bottom of this post. Happy Father's Day to my late father, my husband, my nephew, my uncles - and every other wonderful father out there! May you all feel the love that we three girls had for our beloved Daddy.
And the poem found inside the card above:
"How to be happy though married?"
That's a popular question today,
And some couples never do solve it
And each goes a separate way;
But I know the answer - no foolin'-
It's really a simple one, too,
I solved it without any trouble
By just being married to you.

Taking Off For The Weekend...

Just a quick post today - we went to the Farmer's Market this morning, and now I'm taking off to go see my sisters. We are going to (try to) sell stuff tomorrow in Georgetown.
The photo by Jim Arndt on this card cracks me up! I only WISH we had as much neat stuff as these ladies have for sale! (Card by Avanti Press) Please do not use image without permission...I hope they don't mind me using it!

Vintage Menus

I have a special fascination with vintage menus. Maybe it stems from working in restaurants for 20 years, I don't know. These first two are gorgeous examples, from a cruise to Hawaii on the S.S. Lurline taken by my mother-in-law in the 1936.
Such beautiful colors on these! They were designed for Matson Navigation Co. by Frank MacIntosh.
This is a wonderful book filled with photographs and information. "May I Take Your Order?" - beautifully gathered by the author Jim Heimann.
I think my Grandpa had this old menu from Buena Park:
I get a kick out of their slogan "Duck Inn and Waddle Out". Indeed.. I'll have that Roast Leg of Pork Dinner for 90 cents, and a slice of that 15 cent pie, please. (Click on it to make it larger and legible!)
This last one was here in the house, too, from The Columbia House. The restaurant still exists, but is now The Jenny Lind Restaurant, and is operated, along with the City Hotel and the Fallon Ice Cream Parlor, by Forever Resorts.
Oh, and I think the prices might be a little higher now.

Random Shots Of Stuff

Just a few pictures of some random little spots in our house, featuring items from my collections. The first one, below, is the side of a tall cupboard in our laundry room/pantry.
A display of colorful stuff on my red hutch, including two Hall pitchers, swanky swigs ,a Bauer custard cup, and a Mary Engelbreit cup and saucer. Some day I will post more photos of my swanky sets.

And three of my very favorite tea towels featuring embroidery and applique.
Can you tell I like COLOR?

The Mod Squad

Another favorite TV show from my past. How cool were Julie, Pete and Linc? I only have a few old TV Guides, but when I found this one, I actually remembered it vividly.I wanted to BE Peggy Lipton, I loved watching her! I didn't have her beautiful, tall, model-slender body or face, though! Nope - the long blonde hair was about as close as I got! When I came across this Whitman book a few years ago, I had to get it, too.
Blast from the past.
I had no desire whatsoever to see the movie "remake" (if you want to call it that). Not really sure why I felt that way, because I looked forward to the Bewitched movie and when I saw it, I enjoyed it. And I'm looking forward to the Get Smart movie, too. But no, don't mess with my Mod Squad. I'd rather watch the old series again.

Elves And A Pixie

This cute little wood hinged triptych is one that somebody decoupaged - so cute with little elves catching butterflies. I'm sure Mother found it at a thrift shop. She gave it to me years ago. I think it's adorable. Certainly one of a kind.
This Tinker Bell figurine is from Disneyland. She's a pretty one. I like to buy them if they look nice, but there hasn't been a new one available for awhile. Now I kind of wish I could find some of the older ones. And have you seen these in the stores? It's a fuzzy Tinker Bell artboard from Disney that comes with 6 scented markers for you to color it in with. I haven't colored it yet - I'm afraid I will mess it up! My sister gave it to me.
Pretty little pixie!

Rand McNally Elf Books

I love these vintage books so much!
They are just the CUTEST stories,
With the sweetest illustrations!
The little blue train here, from Bedtime Stories, reminds me of Thomas The Tank Engine with his smiling face! Wonder which came first?
And then, there are the Junior Elf books - smaller ones. Can you believe how cute this one is?
Absolutely too adorable.
If I had unlimited funds, I would search Ebay and everywhere else, and buy every single one I could find until I had every one ever printed. I don't need them, of course - I just love them. And I want them. I can't help myself.

Run, Run, As Fast As You Can....

You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man. I finally got a copy of this adorable book in a lot I bought on eBay a while back.
You might be thinking - hey, it's not Christmas! But, you know, this story has nothing to do with Christmas. And it doesn't have a happy ending. Not from his point of view, at least! I found this birthday card here in the house. These were neat, with the little pull-out copy of the story. I've seen other little stories and nursery rhyme cards like this. Wish I had them all.
This page was from an ABC Book that was in the same lot. I like how Mama went through and wrote the small version of each letter next to the capital letter. The better to teach you with , my dear. (I know, different story!)
This little lot of books had belonged to a little girl named Barbara Ann Miller. She must have been around the same age as my sisters and me, because many of the books are dated, some say From Mama, some from others. It's a little bit sad, isn't it? I mean, what happened to Barbara, and why didn't she want her childhood books? I'm so glad I have the ones I do from my own childhood. I'll take good care of yours, too, Barb. I promise.

Lotus, California

Well, I have managed to get a couple of California hankies that I hope some day will be part of a lovely bag like the one I showed in my post about handkerchiefs last month. And the great little incense box was a yard sale find. I'm a sucker for great graphics on packaging, so I scooped it up. It has the original Sprouse Reitz price tag on the bottom - 10c. I felt like scanning them all together because there is a Lotus in California. It's right next to Coloma. I went to a hair salon in Lotus (about , oh, um - 33 years ago, maybe?), and got my hair permed for the first time. Now, I don't REMEMBER going in and saying - "Okay, Chris- give me curls like Shirley Temple had.":

But maybe I did.
(P.S.Do you see my Jeanette Jadite in the background there on top of the shelf? I started collecting that a LONG time ago!)

Vintage Playing Cards And Game Cards

I have some great old cards. These art deco style ladies from the 30's are some of my favorites:
And I just LOVE this set of Old Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards!

These are from a great set with photos of the "Leading Moving Picture Stars"
The Donald Duck Game - don't know how to play that one! From maybe the 40's?, I think:
And these last ones aren't old - but they're cute. Old Maid and Donkey card games. I got these in my Christmas stocking a few years ago:
I think I'll have to photocopy some of the old ones ( in the first 4 pictures) to use in cards, scrapbooking or crafts, because I don't think I can bear to part with them!

Paisley Pretties

Paisley is so pretty, isn't it? Whether it's the gorgeous purples and greens of this fabric from a blouse I found at Ross:
Or this lovely vintage silk crepe scarf with fringe:
Or the bright blues and greens on my new travel bag from T.J. Maxx:
and even on this quilted fabric backpack bag:
They are all so different, and yet quite nice each in their own way.

My Favorite Framed Prints #7

I found this pair of oval-framed beauties a number of years back at an outdoor antique show in Auburn, California.
I hate to pick favorites, but I really do love this pair.
Sibyl and Shirley - I will never part with you!

P.S. It is hard for me to believe that this is my 200th post. It feels like rather a milestone of sorts. I do wish I had more readers, though!

Happy Birthday To "The Beav"!

Jerry Mathers turns 60 years old today. Just wanted to wish him a very happy birthday! Leave It To Beaver was a fun show to watch. I still enjoy it. That Ward Cleaver (as played by Hugh Beaumont) sure was a handsome man - such a nice dad, and a wonderful husband. My husband had an older brother - and they were growing up around the same time - but I'm not sure his life was quite like the Cleavers. I am feeling rather nostalgic for simpler times.
I was saddened to hear about the fire at Universal Studios yesterday. The article I read in the paper this morning said you "might recognize the courthouse facade as where the Beav went to school." If you are a fan of Ghost Whisperer, you would recognize it as the town square in Grandview, where Melinda has her antiques shop "Same As It Never Was", and , perhaps more famously, it was also used in the movie Back To The Future. The Courthouse Square and New York street sets are expected to be rebuilt. Still sad.

Vintage 50's and 60's Patterns

I don't have a lot of these vintage patterns, but I sure like some of the ones I do have! Does this lovely woman in the beret, below, not look as though she should be strolling along the banks of the Seine in Paris? They all look as cool as cucumbers in their classic sleeveless blouses. (From 1952)
I'd sure love to have that blue floral number in the pattern below with the gathered cummerbund belt at the waist, matching shoes and hat! Gorgeous! Did you notice that in each of the outfits depicted on the patterns I've shown, at least one of them is wearing gloves? I like how Diane Keaton wants to bring back wearing gloves. (This one from 1957)
And these last two ladies (from 1960) look incredibly stylish in their lovely dresses, as well!
I love what Julie over at Jane's Apron does with vintage patterns. When I purchased something from her, she sent me one of her cute postcards. You can buy them from her etsy shop!
