Some Of Our Old 45's - Part 1

The record below is the very first one I ever owned. It was a Christmas gift from my friend Marcia. She knew I loved the song, so she bought the 45 for me. Bobby Goldsboro- innocent enough, right?
Well - my taste in music and everything else has always been rather eclectic. This one is the first 45 I ever purchased myself - "Touch Me" and "Wild Child":
I LOVED the TV show "Here Come The Brides" - and I also loved the theme song:
I liked the idea of comparing the different record sleeves from RCA through the years - "Seattle", above from 1968, and "In The Year 2525", below from 1969:
The RCA sleeve that holds "Chick-a-boom" from 1971 is my favorite. Apparently, I put it into that sleeve way back then - but it's not the correct one - wonder which 45 did come inside? I sure can't remember now! :
"Rock The Boat" from 1974 - I love that song!
And , from 1975 -"I'm Sorry" by John Denver - I still miss him:

The Fabulous Irving Berlin

The incomparably talented and prolific Irving Berlin was born on this date in 1888. My meager words cannot even express how much I love his music.
These are just a few examples of sheet music from my collection featuring some of his songs that I love:
Sometimes, I actually feel that I have known his music my entire life. Maybe I also knew it in a previous life? It is a part of me::
He lived to the ripe old age of 101, and we were ever so lucky to have him.

Mother Lode Roundup

It's parade day here in town. Mother's Day weekend is always the one for the Mother Lode Roundup and Rodeo around here. So, I thought I would just share a few old pictures from parades many moons ago:

Picturesque

Do you remember these? Picturesque - The Elegant Mosaic Craft:


When I moved in with my husband, the mosaic pictured above was hanging in his living room. His mother made three of the pictures. I found one of the boxes in a closet when we moved into this house:

I also found two brochures or catalogs which feature pictures of 27 different designs that were available for purchase at the time.


It's funny, because I didn't use to like them - but now, I do!

My Favorite Framed Prints #24

Found these at a thrift store - "Young Girl With Kitten" by Perroneau:
and "Portrait of the Fluyder Children" by Sir Thomas Lawrence:
Maybe calling them prints is cheating a little bit - they are actually reproduced works on satiny fabric in miniature (3X4 inches)-pretty, though, aren't they?

Baby Elephant Walk

I am a HUGE fan of Henry Mancini's work. One of the greatest composers who ever lived, in my opinion. (How can anyone disagree with that?) And Baby Elephant Walk from the Paramount Picture "Hatari" is just one of my many favorites. Such cute pink baby elephants on this cocktail party invitation from 1952. My sister has some great pieces of vintage glassware with pink elephants on them!
And then, I just had to include this little blue ceramic one that I found here in the house:

He wanted to be included, and I simply couldn't deny him.

Funny Face

Yesterday would have been Audrey Hepburn's 80th birthday. So, in her honor, I wanted to post today about one of my favorite movies.
I LOVE "Funny Face".
I love HER face.

Then And Now #40 - Reddi-wip

Good old Reddi-Wip has been around for quite awhile. I believe this advertisement is from the 50's:

I was THRILLED when they came out with a fat free version! I had been wishing and hoping for it - how did they know? I make a point of trying to have some in the refrigerator at all times. I don't care much for Cool Whip in any of it's forms - although I'm not averse to using it in a recipe.
Nope - give me good old real cream (Fat Free) Reddi-wip!

Polynesian

When I came across this page in an old (1939) magazine, I was immediately reminded of the tapa paper/cloth (in the 2nd photo) that I had found among souvenirs from my mother-in-law's cruise to Hawaii:

The newsletter they were given on board was called The Polynesian:
As far as I can tell from the ephemera I discovered, she went on two cruises to Hawaii - one in 1929, and one in 1936, onthe Matson Lines:

I just love all this old stuff.

Our Azaleas

I figured it might be fun to share these pictures with you today - our azaleas through the years. We begin with 1965 - one yellow, one pink, barely begun:
Here they are in 1973 - with the in-laws:

They aren't quite what they used to be - but they still look nice! One more picture, below - these two potted azaleas were given to me as gifts. The bright pink one was from my friend Sarah - and thank goodness my husband kept it watered, or I would have lost it for sure.

The paler pink one was a gift from my friend Marcia when our mother died 12 years ago. It has changed color - it started out as a gorgeous sort of a salmon or coral color. It's still pretty - just different. Those two are the most special to me. But, they all make me happy when I look at them.

100 Years Ago

The picture below was taken in 1909. A Maypole Dance in front of The Dome - the old Sonora Grammar School that had just opened earlier that year.
And here is another darling image of a Maypole, on this May Day Dance page. It is from an old music book we used when we were little. All three of us took piano lessons for years. Cute!
My husband and his brother, and my father-in-law all went to this school ( the same one that is pictured above) - you can see why they call it The Dome:
It is still standing, thank goodness. It now houses the local Cosmetology School, among other things.
