Models From The 70's - Season Hubley

I wish I could have found more photos of Season; she's so adorable. I loved her short haircut. The picture above is from an ad for Cover Girl Clean Make-up from 1972. Here she is again on the left in the photo below:



All of the pictures above are from fashion layouts found in my vintage Seventeen magazines. The one below is from an advertisement for Clairol Frost 'N Tip. (All are from 1971.)

Season later became an actress, as well - and , in fact, she even had a role on "All My Children", in 1992 (as Angelique Marick) which, I am sad to say, aired their very last episode on ABC television yesterday. I watched it for years, and I'll miss it.
( I don't watch "TV" online, so I'm not planning to go there.)

What's Penny Wearing? #53 The Perfect Dress To Welcome Autumn

I found the perfect dress for Penny to model today to usher in the fall season.
It's a vintage dress made of a nice heavier-weight brown cotton, with long sleeves and embroidered details.
I also found two gorgeous wool scarves made in Italy for her to toss over her shoulders:

And even a vintage suede fringed belt to cinch around the waist!
Penny likes it.

Fab And Funky Finds

I get a major kick out of finding vintage Takahashi items from the 70's! I was VERY happy when I spotted this owl memo holder:
A cool vintage canister for Odds And Ends (and Miscellaneous Things & Goodies, Etc), and I like the colorful graphics on the Sunsweet prunes tin:

Once Upon A Time in Placerville No. 8: Panoramas, the Ivy House and Pearson's Soda Works

Today I am showing you two panoramic pictures from approximately 1910, which were recently for sale on ebay. Unfortunately I was not the lucky winner (and payer-outer of mucho dinero) but I saved copies of the photos and will share them with you here.
Houses on the hillside. A familiar sight in Placerville, but I am not sure where these are. I haven't spent a lot of time searching out the site. I am pretty sure they are on the North side of the creek (and now highway). I am thinking they are probably located at Lincoln and Norman Streets, since they are high above the town in the right area. There are still a lot of old homes up there although some have been torn down. I will print this photo out one of these days and go for a drive and see if there are any homes left for comparison.

Charles Elmer Upton Photo. There are several old real photo postcards printed by Upton. I would have liked to have added these photos to my collection, but they are rare and the seller was asking a high price, and got it.

A closeup of some of the homes on the hill. I am ready to move in as soon as we find them. I love the yards with their wire and wood fences.

The next panoramic photo has the Ivy House on the left and the Pearson's Soda Works (now the home of the Cozmic Cafe). Look just off center right for the two story building with three windows. In the background Cedar Ravine winds off to the Southeast with lots of homes clustered together.

The entire photo, which I wish I had in a bigger version, appears to be taken from a hillside, perhaps the one with the homes in the first photos (see the fence?)

It is such fun to go "thrifting", you just never know what you will come across!

Then And Now # 82 Tabasco Sauce

Good old McIlhenny Co. Tabasco Brand Sauce. It's been around since 1868. I don't have an ad to share from that far back!
So, let's fast forward to 1962. Back "Then", there was just the one, their famous red Pepper Sauce:

This ad is from 1968 - still the one and only Red:

They also make a Bloody Mary Mix. Here's how it looked back in 1975:

But "Now", on my grocer's shelf, I found all three of these, below - not only the Original Flavor, but also Green Pepper Sauce and Chipotle!

There are a number of other sauce flavors, as well. They make Buffalo Style Hot Sauce, Habanero Sauce, Garlic Pepper Sauce, and Sweet & Spicy Pepper Sauce, along with a host of other products including salsas and snacks.
But right "Now" in my cupboard? You'll find only the Green Pepper Sauce. I'm afraid the Original Red is actually too hot for me - but I LOVE the Green!

And it's all for me - my husband doesn't touch the stuff.
He doesn't know what he's missing.

Apple Harvest Time

Last week, nearly every one of our local morning news programs featured a story about Apple Hill in Camino. They had reporters at the apple ranches, and they were showing all of the apples, apple goodies, fudge, etc. that you can buy when you visit.
I have shared with you a number of times that Apple Hill is one of my favorite areas. I have rather a sentimental attachment to the place.
As I often do whenever the fall season approaches, I have been longing to go there for a visit.

I think I may be able to make it over there in a couple of weeks.

Perhaps I will even wear my pretty little glass apple pendant that I got from my friend JoAnn.

Here is a recipe from an old Apple Hill brochure for a delectable apple cake:
Apple Hill Cake
Combine:
2 c. sugar
1/2 cup oil
2 eggs
Add:
4 c. diced apples
Sift together:
2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
2 tsp. baking soda
Add (flour mixture) to apple mixture.
Pour into a 9X13 greased baking pan.
Bake for 1 hour in a preheated 350 degree oven.
Serve hot, warm or cold, plain, frosted with whipped cream or ice cream.
"Easy as pie - or even easier than that!", she said with a wink and a smile. ;)

I made the cake last night. I substituted Splenda Sugar Blend for half the sugar, and used brown sugar for the other half. I used prune puree (baby food) in place of the oil, and organic whole wheat flour for half of the flour. I also used a bit more than 4 cups of apples. I would have used egg substitute, but I was out. It was done in 45-50 minutes, rather than an hour.
And it's REALLY good.
