Five Good Pieces

I'm not sure about you, but in my experience, finding vintage sheet music at thrift stores is a fairly unusual occurrence. So when I found some, I was surprised - and even more so when I asked the price. Fifty cents each. Sold!
These were the ones I chose:
Grandfather's Clock, 1935:

The Eastbound Train, 1935:

Listen To The Mockingbird, 1936:

In The Evening By The Moonlight, 1937:

I'm Always Chasing Rainbows, 1945:

Nice additions to my sheet music collection.

What's Penny Wearing? #79 Ready For Work

Penny is wearing another one of my outfits for work - this one pulled together with a couple of finds from the thrift store. I found the pretty green blouse with a lovely lace collar a while back, and then just recently I found this great calico skirt:
The two look so perfect for autumn together!
I added this cameo brooch that belonged to my mother-in-law.....
......and a green pinafore that I already had:

And all together, it makes for one of my VERY least expensive work outfits - for a change!

A Few Folsom Postcards

Let's take a gander at Folsom, California. First of course, we could be stuck in Folsom Prison.

Or we could escape and cross this old railroad bridge.

But I would like to cross what we call the "Rainbow Bridge" and go check out the town.

Folsom has changed a bit over the ages.

Not too many horse and buggies anymore.

Folsom is perched on the side of a sloping hill, just above the American River, surrounded by dredging operations and the piles of river rock left behind.

We could go buy some pottery or antiques on Sutter Street.

I haven't been to see the "new" Sutter Street since they removed the island in the middle.

I guess cars have taken over the town again.

As fall comes the tourists and bargain hunters will come to visit.  Maybe we can meet Vickie.

In the evening we can find a great place to eat.  I vote for Mexican. Chips and salsa, anyone?

More From Vera

Vintage Vera Neumann today - starting with the first two images, which feature Vera scarves as shown in Family Circle Magazine, circa 1969:

These dresses in Banlon jersey designed by Vera sold for $32 each in 1970:
Those are cloth napkins she designed that you see on the tray below:
And these are my two latest scarves that I have found at the thrift stores recently:

Just a bit of vintage Vera to brighten your morning!

My Vintage Elna

Sister Lori here: The other day I picked up this vintage magazine at a thrift store.

Just a few pages in, I found the following advertisement:

Well, guess what? I have the exact machine!! It is my old workhorse of many years and it belonged to our Grandma.
Here is mine. I believe I inherited it in the mid 1970's and used it to make things for some early craft fairs I did back then, and also to sew my daughter's clothes.
It is a great machine in a cabinet. I used to have it cleaned and oiled regularly, and I need to find someone to do that again soon, as I will be sewing for my granddaughter now.
Still have the receipt and all from when Grandma bought it back in 1960.
It sure is a good machine, I have the original books and attachments, too. Love it!!

Thanks Grandma!!!

Trying Out A Few New Products

New - or new to me, starting with Hershey's Simple Pleasures chocolates. A little while back, Sunday's paper had $2.00 off coupons for these and one of the drug stores had them on sale at 2/$6.00. I had more than one coupon, so getting them for $1.00 each seemed like a pretty darned good deal to me! I like them, and they each have just one Points Plus Values on Weight Watchers. They do have sugar alcohols in them, but that's only a problem if you eat a bunch - and I don't. They're good:

When I found a coupon for Yoplait in the paper, as well, and saw that they now have just 2 Points Plus Values, that was enough to get me to try these, too. Since I cannot find the Weight Watchers Yogurt anywhere anymore, I needed other yogurt options that were only 2 Points. I eat a yogurt every day, and these really are pretty good. I'll pair the peach flavor with a cut-up nectarine, cherry with strawberries, blueberry with blueberries - you get the idea:
We haven't opened up this new Heinz Tomato Ketchup with Balsamic Vinegar yet, but it sounded so good to me that I had to pick up a bottle. I want to try it with sweet potato fries - as soon as the weather is cool enough that we don't mind turning the oven on again!
Usually, I buy Boboli pizza crust, but I had a coupon for the Freschetta brand, plus it was on sale, so I decided to try it:

It made a pretty darned good pizza, and I do believe I will purchase it again.
So, those are just a few of "Heidi's Little Reviews" - for whatever they're worth!

Cal-Vada Lodge

I found the plate above at a local thrift store. The New Cal-Vada Lodge - well, old or new - I'd never heard of it. Cal-Neva I had heard of, but not this one.
So I looked on the internet, and at least I found an old matchbook cover:

And I also the postcard, below, posted on Flickr by Know Nevada. So we know it is/was in Crystal Bay, Nevada. And the picture and the matchbook, I'm guessing - are from the 1950's. So I wonder when the plate is from? The "New" Cal-Vada Lodge. We're assuming it's newer than the "old" Cal-Vada Lodge.

Postcard found on Flickr

Don't know. Whatever. I like restaurant china, and I think it's neat.

The Great Frame-Up

I found these great hand-painted frames at a thrift store - they were too pretty to resist!
So then, naturally, I have to start looking for the best thing to put inside. Well, the very same week at another thrift, I found this pretty card which just seemed perfect for the blue one:

I found an almost one-hundred year-old postcard that looked decent inside the red one:
Still searching for what I think looks best inside the green one, but this spin-art from a fair will have to do for now:
Apparently, these frames were sold at Target five years ago.

Luckily, I didn't have to pay anywhere near $24.99 apiece for mine!
That makes me happy.

A Few In Blue

I just enjoy posting interiors that I come across in my vintage magazines, so here are a few for your perusal today.
A living room:

A dining room:

And a bedroom:

Here's hoping you that you never get the blues.

Cat in Tree

Good morning. Tina here. I am again having computer problems so this will be short.

Just a shot my son Josh took of a partridge in a pear tree... whoops, I mean a calico in a pear tree.

Here in Kelsey we have foxes who eat the fruit out of our trees, but so far our cats haven't gotten the idea that they can also share in the wealth.

Monterey Jade

One of the many pretty things we inherited when my husband's parents passed away was this lovely snail. I knew nothing about it at first. But then I came across the little original tag that had come with it and discovered that it was Monterey Jade. It's a beautiful blue/green pottery with an unique glaze that was made by the Monterey Pottery company in the Carmel Valley, and was sold at gift shops located in Monterey and in the wonderful village of Carmel-By-The-Sea. My in-laws used to vacation frequently in Carmel; it was one of their favorite places. I am very fond of this little snail:

I found this beautiful little vase last year at a yard sale - I could not believe it when I spotted it sitting there on the table that had been picked over by many shoppers before me much earlier in the day:

Truly a delightful find; I believe it may have been less than a dollar.
And then, just a couple of weeks ago, I went into one of my favorite thrift shops here in town, and what do you suppose I spotted? Yes, they were sitting there waiting (as if just for me). Two gorgeous tiles:

I know Monterey Jade when I see it, and when I turned them over to look at the price tag, and yes, indeed - this was written on the bottom:

Unlike a large number of the items I find at the thrift stores, these are most certainly NOT for sale.
