"Antiquing" Furniture

Remember when "antiquing" furniture first became popular? These magazine advertisements are from 1968. Do it in orange:
..or yellow, or blue - any color at all:
Somebody did it to this little stand at some point. I use it as a record cabinet - but actually it is normally covered up with a piece of vintage barkcloth:
I think you can see what it's like from my pictures. It stands out just a tad too much, but I just haven't felt like painting it:
Now THIS is my chair I "antiqued" years ago as part of a 4-H project. It's a much prettier blue!

I think I love it now even more than I did then, if that's possible.

when john and i were hitting the auctions in 1969 - we had lots of stuff - we furnished our apt with all 'used' items and we were antinquing items that could not 'stand' on their own or were so cheap (our kitchen table was solid wood and cost $3) - our colors ranged from red - kind of an olive green - and we did some blue also. boy did this post bring that all back.

Every morning when I read your blog, I am sitting at my computer on my desk and chair which I "antiqued" in green for a 4H project in somewhere about 1967. Remember the 4H booth at the El Dorado County Fair in which our antiqued furniture was displayed? I think we used to have pictures somewhere. Over the years the desk edges have become legitimately "distressed" although that wasn't the popular thing to do at the time. I keep thinking about repainting the desk and chair but have never gotten around to it. I always really liked your chair, it has nice pressed wood carving on it. Mine is fairly plain but very study and has held up well over the years through the many weights I have been while sitting in it! Lovwe T

I Do remember this process. My friend had a whole big bookcase that was antiqued. I love your blue chair, too! Twyla

Oh My Goodness! My granma loved doing this "antiquing" thing! She antiqued everything. We are now spending alot of time "unantiquing" it. Oh the greens and yellows! I do like that blue chair!

Blessings
